Norwegian proggers Gazpacho are back today with a superb new video for their single ‘Sky King’, taken from their latest and widely celebrated album Magic 8-Ball.
The song was inspired by Richard Russell, a ground service agent with no formal flight training who stole an aircraft and flew alone for over an hour. His conversations with air traffic control were broadcast live, and revealed a man speaking with unusual calm, humor, and clarity as the situation unfolded.
"This song is a tribute to human dignity and the refusal to conform to anyone or anything. It is dedicated to the 'Sky King' Richard Russell who performed the ultimate rejection of that mindset and reminds us that we still have wings. Fly high!"
Widely regarded as one of the most innovative acts in modern progressive music, Gazpacho have carved out a cult following with their unique blend of art rock and cinematic storytelling. From their critically acclaimed 2007 masterpiece Night to the hauntingly beautiful Demon (2014), the band has consistently pushed the boundaries of progressive music.
They've toured with legends like Marillion, played to devoted audiences across Europe, and earned a reputation for crafting concept albums that challenge and move listeners in equal measure. In March, Gazpacho will be heading out on a European tour with shows penned for Germany, the Netherlands, UK, France and more. Support comes from French band Hamasaari.
Nach fünfjähriger Pause kehren Gazpacho mit "Magic 8-Ball" mit acht neuen Tracks zurück, die sich um die Idee des Schicksals drehen. Wie es sich ohne Vorwarnung bewegt und wie unsere Entscheidungen uns langsam von dem entfernen, was wir zu sein glaubten.
Das Konzept wurzelt im Schiff des Theseus. Wenn man nach und nach Teile von sich selbst verliert, ist man dann immer noch dieselbe Person? Die Band nutzt diese Frage, um Identität, Bedauern, Erinnerung und die Art und Weise zu erforschen, wie die Zeit alles neu formt, oft ohne dass wir es merken.
Der Titel „Magic 8 Ball“ knüpft an die Idee von Zufälligkeit und Unvermeidlichkeit an. Etwas schütteln, um Antworten zu finden, die man bereits vermutet, und den Zyklus immer wieder wiederholen. Die Idee der Unendlichkeit steht dabei im Mittelpunkt. Dies sind keine einmaligen Geschichten. Sie spiegeln sich gegenseitig wider und zeigen, wie leicht dieselben Muster in unterschiedlichen Formen wiederkehren können.
Musikalisch bleibt das Album dem Kern von Gazpacho treu. Atmosphärisch, vielschichtig und emotional. Aber fokussierter. Kein unnötiger Ballast. Nur acht Geschichten, klar und spannungsgeladen erzählt. Das Album wurde von Thomas Juth (a-ha/Elton John/Paul McCartney/Cat Stevens) gemischt und von Hans Olsson im Svenska Grammofonstudion Mastering gemastert.
